Dark Sky Places in Michigan

Michigan is a great State to Star Gaze! 

From capturing Auroras to  hanging out on the dark shores of Lake Superior in the UP, there are plenty of places to see the stars.



DarkSky International Parks

Dark sky parks are designated by the DarkSky International. They are located in the following places in Michigan: 

  • Headlands Dark Sky Park (Emmet County park)
  • Keweenaw Dark Sky Park (Keweenaw County)
  • Dr. T.K. Lawless Park (Cass County)
  • Beaver Island State Wildlife Research Area International Dark Sky Sanctuary (Beaver Island, MI)

Dark Sky Preserves

Dedicated by the State of Michigan as a Dark Sky Preserve


  • Lake Hudson Recreation Area (Lenawee County)
  • Negwegon State Park (Alcona County)
  • Port Crescent State Park (Huron County)
  • Rockport Recreation Area (Presque Isle County)
  • Thompson's Harbor State Park (Presque Isle County)
  • Wilderness State Park (Emmet County)

Michigan is a great place to stargaze and there are several State Parks and places to see the night sky. Here are just a few:
